KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong defended the position of MCA President for a second term after the official election results for the party's central committee members were announced by Secretary General Datuk Chong Sin Woon at midnight tonight.

Wee who is also the Member of Parliament for Ayer Hitam obtained 569 votes, defeating his rival who is also a former member of the central committee Datuk Tan Chong Seng who only obtained 11 votes.

As for the position of deputy president, Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon also retained his position after winning unopposed.


Meanwhile, the position of vice president saw Tanjung Piai Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng get the highest number of votes with 496 votes.

The two incumbents also managed to retain their positions, namely Datuk Lim Ban Hong who won 477 votes and Datuk Tan Teik Cheng who won 469 votes, while another incumbent, Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker failed to defend the position when he only got 136 votes.

Another place for the position was filled by Datuk Lawrence Low Ah Keong who got 470 votes.

Wee, when met, said the large mandate given to him by the delegates was a responsibility that needed to be shouldered with more commitment to restore the party's glory.

"Our (MCA) challenge is big and there are many more political twists and turns to go through but I am confident with the new team formed, we are confident (will be able to) plan strategies and also various programs to ensure that this party can do something that goes with the times," he said.

The party selection process is made in accordance with Article 167 of the MCA Constitution which stipulates that it must be held within six months after the general election
