Viral message on Victoria Institution closing down untrue: Education Ministry
NST
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon today quashed a rumour being circulated via WhatsApp and Facebook that the iconic, 124-year-old Victoria Institution (V.I) secondary school here is being closed down.
The message, which has gone viral among Victoria Institution alumni in particular, claims that the school is being denied student admission, and that the number of pupils has dwindled.
It alleges that there are only 67 Form One students left at the school, and that some classes only have seven students each.
The message asserts that the school is being closed because the land, which sits in the heart of KL, is being privatised.
The rumour has raised concerns among school alumni that VI’s fate would resemble that of Bukit Bintang Girls' School (BBGS), another storied institution which was demolished to make way for development
