ALOR STAR: The pick-up truck driver involved in the fatal crash which killed a senior police officer and his wife in Baling on Tuesday, has been detained for failing a drug test.
The 37-year female driver from Baling was detained after she tested positive of methamphetamine, based on a preliminary urine test.
Baling police chief Superintendent Shariffuddin Yusof in confirming the arrest, said the preliminary drug test was carried out as part of the investigation into the fatal accident.
He said the woman would be presented at the Baling Magistrate’s Court for remand application proceedings Wednesday morning.
Police earlier today classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
In the 7.15am incident, the Baling district police Narcotics Investigation Department head and his wife were killed, while their four young children were injured in an accident involving three vehicles at a junction in Kampung Teluk Teduri.
Assistant Superintendent Mohd Noor Mat Yaub, 38 and wife Suriya Abd Rahman, 37, died at the scene due to multiple injuries.
It is believed the incident occurred while Mohd Noor was driving his wife, a teacher at SK Teluk Teduri, and their four children, aged between six and 11, to school there. The couple’s fifth child, a toddler, was not in the vehicle.
Mohd Noor, who was driving a Perodua Myvi, was traveling from Baling to Kupang when his car was rear-ended by a Toyota Hilux as he was slowing down to make a right turn near Kampung Teluk Teduri.
The impact hurled the Myvi into the opposite lane, right into the path of an approaching Honda City.
The 32-year-old Honda City driver was also injured in the accident.
The remains of Mohd Noor and Suriya were laid to rest at their hometown in Kampung Buluh, Tanah Merah in Kelantan yesterday evening.
