PETALING JAYA: The Government should help stateless local Indians instead of giving controversial Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik (pic) permanent resident (PR) status.
MIC Youth chief Datuk Sivarraajh Chandran said the granting of PR status to Dr Zakir should be the "last thing" the Government should have done.
"It's our request to the Government to think forward to resolve the issues of stateless Indians and red identity cards as soon as possible.

"The Malaysian Government should send him (Dr Zakir) back to India if there is an official notice or warrant from the Indian government to extradite him for investigation.

"He is a divisive figure and national interest should come first," he said in statement Thursday.

Sivarraajh added that Dr Zakir's presence in Malaysia irked most of the Indian non-governmental organisations who had called for his removal from the country.

He also rubbished claims by Opposition parties that there were 300,000 stateless Indians in Malaysia.

"MIC, through its initiative such as the MyDaftar programme and Special Implementation Task Force on the Indian Community (SITF) and the BCIC (Birth certificate and IC) by MIC Youth nationwide have resolved many stateless Indian issues," Sivarraajh said.On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that Dr Zakir was given PR status about five years ago.
