Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan has waded in on the backlash surrounding the appearance of Syed Abdullah, the older brother of Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, at an official eSports event in Shah Alam, Selangor, last weekend.
Tan tweeted that he felt it was “plain stupid” for some quarters to make an issue over Syed Abdullah getting a front row seat at the Malaysia eSports Selection for SEA Games 2019 organised by eSports Malaysia (ESM).

Tan also tweeted that if Syed Abdullah were to attend a Razer event, he would be invited to be at the front, as he is a big fan of eSports and Razer.
Tan’s post came after Syed Saddiq replied a tweet from a user who asked whether Syed Abdullah had been given the power to represent the minister at official events. He explained that his brother attended the event in his own personal capacity.
Initially, the ESM Facebook page had listed Syed Abdullah as “Yang Berusaha En Syed Abdullah, brother of Yang Berhormat Tuan Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Minister of Youth and Sports” on a May 4th post. However, according to the Facebook Edit History, this was removed later.
ESM addressed the controversy with a Facebook statement on May 6. The organisation clarified that Syed Abdullah was not invited to attend the event as a representative of the minister. It explained that Syed Abdullah was there as a fan and supporter of the development of the eSports industry.
The organisation also said that it was just showing its appreciations towards Syed Abdullah for taking the time to attend the event.
The statement ended with a reminder that sports is a platform that brings people together.
