PETALING JAYA: A 26-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman have been detained by Johor police for offences against the Johor royal family.
The man, who works as an operations executive, allegedly made an offensive statement against the Sultan of Johor and the Johor royal institution on Facebook.
The woman, who works as a factory operator, created a fake Facebook account for impersonating Johor royalty.
Both arrests took place at 4pm on Sunday.
Following police reports lodged on March 25 and Jan 19, Johor police opened two investigation papers to track down the suspects.
"Johor police will not compromise and will take appropriate action against any individual found misusing social media," said Johor police chief Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd in a statement on Sunday.
"The Johor police would also like to advise all social media users to be more prudent and tolerant and not make any statement or comments that annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person," he said.
He also advised social media users to respect the sensitivities of others and preserve the harmonious multiracial society of Malaysia.
"Individuals found to be abusing social media will be tracked down and prosecuted in a court of law," said Wan Ahmad.
He said one case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communication Multimedia Act 1998 and if convicted will be liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both.
The suspect is also liable for a further fine of RM1,000 for each day the offence is continued after conviction.
The other case will be investigated under Section 419 of the Penal Code and if convicted can be jailed up to seven years or fined, or both.Read more at http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2017/04/16/two-arrested-for-offences-against-johor-royal-family/#yIS0GR2C0k63uzCi.99
