More than seven million consumers in the Klang Valley can heave a huge sigh of relief as water supply will be back to normal from tomorrow.
Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim announced the good news today and said that the water rationing exercise had been lifted.
"The state government had informed Syabas to abide by the decision and ensure that consumers would get water supply as usual," he said at a press conference at the state secretariat in Shah Alam.
Water supply is expected to be back to normal by tomorrow in most areas and latest by Friday in areas with low water pressure.
The decision to lift the water rationing exercise was made in a meeting last Monday with the National Water Services Commission (SPAN, Selangor Water Administration Board, Kumpulan Semesta Berhad and other concessionaires.
The New Straits Times reported SPAN chairman Datuk Ismail Kassim as saying that the decision was made following the increase of the water level at the Sungai Selangor dam from 36.39% on March 29 to 40.23% yesterday, which is above the critical level.
Ismail said the Selangor government had applied to lift the scheduled water rationing for stages 1, 3 and 4.
“After taking into account efforts taken by the Selangor government to improve its raw water sources, Span agreed to lift the stage 1, 3 and 4 water rationing in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur effective May 1,” he said in a press conference on the sideline of the Perlis state legislative assembly here today.
The Sungai Selangor dam supplies water to over 60% of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor.
Since February 28, millions of households had been enduring water rationing, with two days of supply followed by two days of dry taps.
Yesterday, PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had urged the state government to stop water rationing in the Klang Valley following the increase in the water level at the Sungai Selangor dam.
The state government had initially said yesterday that water rationing in Selangor would continue despite an improvement in water levels at the various dams.
Previously, the Selangor government had also said that the water rationing exercise would only be stopped if the water levels in the Sungai Selangor dam was at least 55%. – April 30, 2014.
