KUALA LUMPUR: More than 10,000 chickens were killed in a fire that razed a pen close to a palm oil plantation near Lorong Setia 2, Kuang, Saturday morning.
Selangor Fire and Rescue department operations director Mohd Sani Harul said officers were alerted by the public of the blaze around 7.30am and extinguished it about an hour later.
The owners and members of the public were reportedly seen moving in and out the burning pen, trying to save as many poultry they could.
"The fire razed about 70% of the two-floor pen, which was 60 x 12m wide. There were no injuries to people.
"The owners said they managed to save about 500 chickens but estimated around 10,500 chickens were lost in the fire," Mohd Sani said.
Early investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a short circuit.
Farmer Zulkarnain Abdullah said the chicken pen, one of three he owns, was equipped with lights and air-conditioning for the poultry.
He said he was asleep during the heavy downpour at 7am when he was awakened by shouts from neighbours that something was on fire.
"I got up and looked through my window and I saw a big fire in one of the chicken pens!
"I ran out to try and save the chickens but the heat was too much, I couldn't get close. I could only stand and watch," said the 36-year-old who supplies chickens to fast-food chain KFC.
