According to a statement released by Anwar’s office, also present at the meeting yesterday were DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali and US assistant secretary of state for East Asia Daniel Russel.
The statement said Rice requested input on strategies to improve US-Malaysia relations.
Anwar referred to the US comprehensive engagement with Indonesia and Vietnam, and suggested that the US created a Working Group on governance and working rights – which would include civil society and opposition representatives – to strengthen the comprehensive partnership announced during Obama’s visit.
On negotiations for the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement, Anwar believed that Malaysia is a “trading nation that must attract Foreign Direct Investment to survive in a challenging global economy”.
Rice acknowledged the need for all parties in Malaysia to have a greater understanding of the TPPA, in addition to a more transparent and inclusive negotiation process.
