The man and his wife, from Taman Sri Tanjung, were arrested for investigations into the murder of the girl last week.
They were believed to be friends of the dead girl’s parents and were temporarily caring for her.
Muar OCPD Asst Comm Azman Ayob said a man in his 30s had confessed to committing the offence during police questioning.
“The suspect and his wife rushed the child to the hospital at around 6.40am last Friday.
“They told the authorities the baby girl was weak when they tried to feed her milk,” he said during a press conference yesterday.
The child was rushed to the emergency unit but was later pronounced dead.
“A post-mortem was conducted and the hospital authorities found that the child had several injuries on her hands and legs and had suffered from massive bleeding to the head,” he said.
He added that the police then quickly carried out a search for the suspects and they were detained at around 8pm the same day.
“After being questioned, the man eventually admitted that he had held the baby by her legs and swung her up and down several times, before accidentally hitting her head on the floor,” he said.
ACP Azman added that the couple rented a house in Jalan Omri and had used the premises to babysit a few children for the last one month or so.
The couple were taking care of the deceased, her four-year-old elder sister, their seven-year-old niece and their own three-year-old son.
“The victim’s parents knew the couple and left their two children under their care on April 4 as they had to go overseas on some matters,” he said, adding that the remaining children had since been temporarily handed over to their close relations.
The couple are under remand for seven days. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
