Lawyer Mahmud Jumaat says he is still representing Zayn Rayyan's mother, denies being appointed by an NGO

Mahmud of Messrs. Emir Mahmud & Co said the decision to represent Ismanira Abdul Manaf was made after meeting their families.

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyer Mahmud Abdul Jumaat came forward on Monday to give an explanation, stating that he is still representing the mother of the late Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, who is currently being remanded until June 13.

Through a statement on the Facebook page, the lawyer from Messrs. Emir Mahmud & Co said that the decision to represent Ismanira Abdul Manaf was made after consideration after meeting with their families.

He emphasized again, the focus at the moment is for all parties to pray that justice for the late Zayn Rayyan can be upheld.

"In any case, I would like to thank the family of Isma (mother of the late Zayn Rayyan) for the enlightenment made by confirming that we indeed helped their family from the beginning of the case.

Through the same statement, Mahmud also denied the appointment of him as a lawyer to Zayn Rayyan's parents previously on the initiative of a non-governmental organization (NGO) as alleged by the child's grandfather, Zahari Mohd Reba.

He said that on May 31, he was contacted by the family of Zayn Rayyan's father at 11pm informing him that the child's parents would be taken to the Petaling Jaya Court for a remand application.

Mahmud said, he sincerely wanted to help because he sympathized with a married couple who had lost a child and were now remanded because of being a suspect or Orang Yang Disyaki (OYDS)

"At that time I didn't think this would be an issue that would be raised by the family of the late Zayn Rayyan's father.

"However, there is no obligation to officially appoint a lawyer for criminal cases. As long as the OYDS party or the OYDS family representative has agreed to appoint the lawyer, it is sufficient.

"What's more, before I entered the court, I confirmed with the parents' family to give this trust to me for remand objection.

"I hope the issue of appointing a lawyer will not arise after this," he added.

On June 4, Mahmud, who represented Zayn Rayyan's parents, decided to withdraw as the couple's lawyer as he wanted to focus on some other cases he was handling.

The remand of Zayn Rayyan's parents was extended for the second time for another six days.

On December 6 last year, Zayn Rayyan's body was found in a creek near the Idaman Damansara Damai Apartment area at 10pm.
