"On Friday, the police received a report from a man in his 50s who works as a cleaner in this city informing that he received a phone call from the suspect asking for a ransom of RM200,000 if he wanted his kidnapped son to be safe.

"The man who was worried about his son's safety filed a police report after receiving the call," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

He said acting on the report and the investigation carried out, the police raided a premises in Shah Alam and arrested the five men and rescued the victim.

Razlam said the victim, who was in his 20s, was found safe and believed to have just arrived in the country to look for work.

"Based on preliminary investigations, the cleaner did not know her son had come to Malaysia and only found out after receiving a phone call from the suspect demanding ransom," he said.

The five men involved, he said, were now remanded for four days for further investigation according to Section 365 of the Penal Code.

He said investigations are also underway whether the incident involved other suspects or a network of syndicates kidnapping foreigners.
