BUKIT MERTAJAM, Oct 31 -- Police arrested 26 individuals, including a woman, for gambling in a raid on a house in Jalan Pow Nee, here, early this morning.
Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police chief ACP Shafee Abd Samad said after carrying out intelligence work, they raided the house at 2 am to detain all the suspect, aged 30 to 67 years, under Ops Dadu.
"During the raid, the suspects including the four senior citizens, were engrossed in gambling. Some tried to escape as soon as they realised the presence of the police but were unsuccessful because we have surrounded the area," he said in a statement tonight.
He said investigations found that some of them came from Lunas and Sungai Petani, Kedah to gamble there and the police were still investigating to determine how long they had turned the house into a gambling location.
He said all those detained were being investigated under Section 7 (2) of the Common Gambling House Act 1953.
They were also charged RM1,000 each for disobeying the Recovery Movement Control Order and failing to comply with the Standard Operating Procedures.
