KUALA LUMPUR: A full and thorough audit on KLIA2 should be conducted by the Auditor-General, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has recommended.
PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed (pic) urged the Government to order the A-G to conduct a full audit on the construction of KLIA2 following the committee's findings of irregularities in the project, including costs which ballooned from RM1.7bil to RM4bil.
“Normally, the PAC initiates investigations based on the findings of the A-G’s Report.
“However, the PAC decided to scrutinise the project following many negative reports on KLIA2 on the grounds of public interest,” Nur Jazlan said Tuesday.
He also said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), which directly funded the project, was not “customer centric”.
“They should be building airports based on what the people need to use and not to determine what people should use.
“This is a very glaring point in the report that should be highlighted,” he said.
In the report, the PAC found that the KLIA2 project did not follow the original plan to replace the Low Cost Carrier Terminal.
“Instead, after unexpected cost increases and upgrades, the concept of KLIA2 was changed to a hybrid airport.
“As a result, KLIA2 seems to be threatening the position of the existing KLIA as the main airport in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Malaysia has lost a golden opportunity to develop the most competitive low cost carrier hub in the Asia Pacific region,” the report said.
