Chinese driver causes two deaths, suspected of being drunk

SIBU - The driver of a Toyota Hilux four-wheel drive vehicle that was involved in an accident that left two dead and two seriously injured at the Paragon Traffic Light, Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Bintulu last night is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Bintulu District Police Chief, Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali said the incident was reported to have occurred at about 11.30pm and the driver was detained for further investigation under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
He said initial investigations found that the Toyota Hilux was believed to have hit the back of a Proton Saga car and then crashed into a traffic light pole at the scene of the incident, while the impact of the collision also caused the Proton Saga to slide into the road divider.
"As a result of the collision, two male and female passengers in the back seat of the Proton Saga died at the scene while the driver and female passenger in the front seat of the car suffered injuries and were rushed to Bintulu Hospital for further treatment," he said in a statement today.
Nixon said members of the public who have further information or witnessed the incident are asked to contact the investigating officer, Insp Pung Ting Khang at the Bintulu Traffic Station at 086-338575 or the Bintulu IPD Operations Room at 086-318304.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre said the two victims who died were identified as Yiu Siew Lee, 34, and Janam Ampar, 44, while the seriously injured were Wilson Tawi, 24, and Anis Sintiabella, 19.
"The driver of the four-wheel drive vehicle, a Chinese national, was not injured and no identifying information (of the driver) has been obtained so far," he added. - Bernama
