Xi's visit: Malaysia-China sign 31 MoUs, exchange notes in strategic sectors

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday witnessed 31 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and exchanges of notes involving ministries and agencies of both countries.
Among the MoUs that are in the spotlight is that between Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and his counterpart Wang Yi, which also touches on cooperation in the Global Security Initiative (GDI).
The two ministers signed an MoU and exchange of notes to strengthen cooperation and promote the implementation of the GDI, in addition to an exchange of notes for the establishment of the Foreign and Defence Cooperation Dialogue.
Meanwhile, Wang Yi also signed an agreement between the two countries with the Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, on visa exemptions for ordinary passport holders and public affairs.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, together with his counterpart, Wang Wentao, will sign MoUs, among others to increase cooperation in services and trade; as well as upgrade the 'Two Countries, Twin Parks' (Malaysia–China Kuantan Industrial Park and China–Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park).
Apart from that, they also signed an MoU to strengthen cooperation in standardization.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook signed an MoU with Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing, on strengthening cooperation in the rail sector.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil also signed an MoU with China Media Group (CMG) President and Editor-in-Chief Shen Hai regarding strengthening cooperation in the media and information sectors.
Earlier today, Xi Jinping was given a state welcome at the Istana Negara in conjunction with a three-day state visit starting Tuesday at the invitation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim.
Sultan Ibrahim welcomed Xi's arrival at 10.30 am.
Also present, apart from the Prime Minister and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were both Deputy Prime Ministers, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, as well as Cabinet Ministers.
Xi and his delegation were also welcomed and honoured at the State Banquet, departing with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Main Dining Hall.
This visit marks Xi's second official visit to Malaysia in 12 years, following the last visit in 2013 which saw the two countries upgrade diplomatic relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Wisma Putra in a previous statement announced that Xi, accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials, is also scheduled to meet with Anwar this evening, to discuss bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest.
