BEIJING: Malaysia will begin formal procedures to join BRICS (a rapidly developing economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) soon, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday.
"We have explained our policy and made a decision. We will start the official process soon," Sputniknews reported quoting Anwar's statement in an interview with the founder of China Guancha media, Li Shimo, when asked about the matter.
BRICS was established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for rapidly developing economies including Brazil, Russia, India and China.
South Africa joined this group in 2010.
Russia assumed the presidency on January 1.
On the same day, BRICS expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
BRICS now accounts for a quarter of the global economy, includes a fifth of global trade, with a population of around 40 percent of the world's population.
