MELAKA: The shipyard project worth more than RM2 billion to be developed in Tanjung Bruas, Melaka will provide the best economic returns in addition to creating more than 3,000 job opportunities for local residents.

Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the job opportunities include the categories of unskilled workers, skilled workers and highly skilled workers, especially in the shipping industry.

"Approximately 90,000 ships pass through the waters in Melaka within a year and the development of this shipyard will make Melaka a maritime center thus raising the state's position in the eyes of the world.

"The state government will support this proposal to make Melaka a world maritime industry location in the middle of the busyness of the Straits of Melaka," he told reporters here last night.

He said this after the relaxed iftar ceremony of the Melaka Chief Minister at the Historic Melaka City Council Square (MBMB) which was attended by about 1,000 people.

Ab Rauf said the development of a shipyard for the repair and construction of ships in Tanjung Bruas is also expected to boost maritime activities, especially in the port area.

He said the project had to be realized within a year after the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for its development was signed on Thursday 13 April, 2023.

On Thursday, the media reported LBS Bina Group Bhd's indirect subsidiary, Leaptec Engineering Sdn Bhd, signed an MoU with Turkiye-based shipyard solutions provider Desan Deniz Ins San AS to explore a proposal to develop a shipyard on 485.62 hectares of reclaimed land in Malacca.

The MoU was signed at Desan's headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey and witnessed by Ab Rauf.
