KUALA LUMPUR: Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick is confident that the cooperative movement can play an important role in the government's efforts to eradicate poverty in this country.

Ewon said this is because such a cooperative movement, in addition to offering lower prices for goods and training its members to engage in business, also provides economic returns in the form of dividends.

"I am very convinced that the cooperative movement is one of many approaches that can help eradicate poverty because apart from its members being able to enjoy lower prices of goods, at the same time they can learn to do business.

"Next, they can enjoy dividends for example from the profits generated by cooperative companies," he told reporters after officiating COOPMart Koperasi Lembah Subang 2 (LS2) Selangor Berhad at the Lembah Subang 2 People's Housing Program (PPR) here today.

Earlier in his speech, Ewon said COOPMart owned by Koperasi LS2 Selangor Berhad, which was established with the support of his ministry through the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM) and the Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT), was a government initiative to reduce the cost of living for the people.

He said the ministry through SKM had allocated RM360,000 to LS2 Selangor Berhad to finance part of the COOPMart development costs.

Therefore, Ewon asked the residents of PPR LS2 to join COOPMart en masse, further making the cooperative a part of the federation of retail and wholesale cooperatives in the country.

In conjunction with the launch of the COOPMart, a Rahmah and Madani Sale program was held which offered a discount of up to 30 percent of the original price for a period of one hour.
