KUALA LUMPUR: TikTok account owner Rayyan Wong was arrested on Wednesday for further investigation into the insulting content against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Regent Sultan of Johor and the Prime Minister that was uploaded on social media recently.
Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that prior to that, a report was made by officers of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) regarding the content.
"Further investigation was carried out which later led to the arrest of the suspect. "The officer saw the content uploaded at 4.30pm by the owner of the TikTok account on the TikTok application," he said on Wednesday.
He said the content was found to be offensive in nature and was believed to be intended to hurt, ridicule and insult the royal institution.
"It has also been found to arouse hatred and provocation against the Royal Institution which has the potential to disrupt public security and national harmony.
"Apart from the arrests, the police also confiscated a smartphone believed to belong to the suspect," he said.
According to him, further investigations are still ongoing.
"The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said.
