KUALA LUMPUR: China is ready to work with Malaysia, making the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations a new starting point, to coordinate development strategies, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation and increase exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, said Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang.

Li, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, said China is also willing to promote the building of a China-Malaysia community that shares a future and makes greater contributions to the peace, stability, development, and prosperity of the region and the world as a whole.

"Currently, China is promoting the modernization of Chinese citizens as a whole through high-quality development. Malaysia, for its part, is promoting national development under the vision of MADANI Malaysia. China is ready to cooperate with Malaysia...," he said in an arrival statement provided to Bernama after arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Tuesday.

This is Li's first visit to the country since taking office in March last year.

His visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, after the signing of the Joint Statement between the second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and the then Chinese Prime Minister Chou En Lai on 31 May 1974.

According to Li, throughout the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China-Malaysia relations have maintained a good growth momentum.

"We have strengthened mutual strategic trust, intensified people-to-people exchanges, and achieved encouraging results in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

"Malaysia is a major emerging economy in Asia, a key member of ASEAN, and has an important role for regional prosperity and stability," said Li.

The Prime Minister said the growth of China-Malaysia relations has brought tangible benefits to the people of both countries, and made a positive contribution to peace and development in the region.

Li said he was honored to pay an official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of China-Malaysia diplomatic relations.

"On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I would like to convey my warm greetings and best wishes to the Malaysian government and people," he said.

He said last year, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Anwar reached an important understanding on building a China-Malaysia community that shares a future, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.

In his official visit this time, he "looks forward to meeting Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and meeting Prime Minister Anwar for in-depth discussions on building a China-Malaysia shared future community and strengthening our comprehensive strategic cooperation."

"I will also attend the celebration of the 50th anniversary of China-Malaysia diplomatic relations and the China-Malaysia Friendship Year," he said.
