KUALA LUMPUR: Former Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to five charges of receiving money from illegal activities amounting to RM1.06 million.

Azlan, 64, made the confession after the charges against him were read before Judge Azura Alwi.

"I plead not guilty and beg to be tried," said Azlan.



According to the five charges, Azlan is alleged to have received proceeds from illegal activities, namely money amounting to RM1,059,675.25 from Sri Kedawang Travel Tours (W) Sdn Bhd, Aidil Travel Tours Sdn Bhd and Abdul Rahim Halim who represents the Aidil Travel company.

All the money was received by the accused through three Maybank checks and one CIMB check which was paid into the accused's Maybank and CIMB accounts and in cash from Abdul Rahim.

He is alleged to have committed the offense at Maybank Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman branch here, CIMB Bank Putrajaya branch and Sheraton Imperial Hotel here, between 19 Feb 2014 and December 2017.

All charges are made in accordance with Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 which is punishable under Section 4(1) of the same act.

The section provides for a maximum prison sentence of 15 years and can be fined not less than five times the amount or value of the proceeds of the illegal activity or instrumentality of the offense at the time the offense was committed or RM5 million, whichever is higher, if convicted.

Azlan was a Member of the Pauh State Assembly (ADUN) from 2013 to 2018, before winning the Bintong state assembly seat from 2018 to last year, before losing in the 15th General Election (GE15).

He who was Menteri Besar of Perlis from 2013 to 2022 also failed to defend the position of UMNO Kangar Division Chief in the party's election, recently.
