SEPANG: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is committed to fighting for a 25 percent reduction in entertainment tax on ticket prices for the Malaysian Grand Prix Motorcycle World Championship (MotoGP), this November.
Its minister, Hannah Yeoh, said that in addition to sports events, the ministry also received many requests for exemptions or reductions in entertainment tax for youth-related events.
"It's inevitable (the price of MotoGP tickets is expensive) so we will fight for it (reduction in entertainment tax)," he told reporters at the Ramadan Ihya Majlis with the media and Sepang International Circuit (SIC) residents, here, yesterday.
In the meantime, Hannah said, it is quite impossible for Malaysia to bring back the Formula 1 (F1) race considering the cost of organizing is too high.
He said, on the contrary, KBS for the time being will prioritize giving funds to SIC including an injection of RM20 million to upgrade infrastructure in an effort to attract more local or international event organizers.
"If we could, we would do (the F1 race) but we really can't afford it now, so we will use the funds we have for other priorities first," he said.
Malaysia hosted the F1 race since 1999 before the government decided to end it in 2017 due to a significant decrease in returns.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of SIC, Azhan Shafriman Hanif assured that there is a difference in the organization of MotoGP at SIC which is scheduled to take place from 10 to 12 November.
In another development, Azhan Shafriman said that the circuit paving work at turns 7 to 12 of the entire 5.54 kilometer long circuit had reached 40 percent.
He is confident that the paving work can be completed by the last week of this month before his side can host the Porsche Carrera Asia Cup scheduled for April 29 and 30.
The last time SIC upgraded the circuit was in 2016 and after that no new paving was done. - BERNAMA
