Brazen RM20k jewellery heist done in less than five minutes

BUTTERWORTH: Police are hunting for three robbers who staged a daring lunch-time heist at a jewellery store at Medan Kurau in Chai Leng Park.
Wearing helmets with dark visors, the three darted into the shop at about 11.45am yesterday armed with a gun and a sledgehammer.
One of them pointed the gun at the sole worker there while his two accomplices stood guard.
The gunman used the hammer to smash the glass display before fleeing with two trays of jewellery worth RM20,000 on a bike.
His accomplices followed behind on another motorcycle.
Photographs taken by witnesses showing the gunman carrying the trays of jewellery on his lap went viral.
Both the motorcycles with false number plates were later found abandoned at Taman Kimsar in Prai.
Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the robbery was over in less than five minutes.
“When we rushed to the scene, we found broken glasses on the floor.
“There was no CCTV in the shop but we’ve recorded statements from eye witnesses,” he added.
ACP Nik Ros said a forensic team and K9 unit were also present.
In October 2015, another jewellery outlet on the same row just a few shops away in Medan Kurau was also robbed when three people wearing full-face motorcycle helmets carted off RM600,000 worth of jewellery.
