PETALING JAYA: A part-time Uber driver claimed trial in a magistrate’s court here to extorting the son of missing Pastor Raymond Koh Kong Jee early this month.
Lam Chang Nam was charged with extorting RM30,000 from Jonathan Koh Szu Hao, 33, for the release of the pastor.
Lam, 31, allegedly committed the offence at Paradigm Mall in Kelana Jaya here at 9.46pm on March 6 and was accused under Section 385 of the Penal Code for putting a person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion.
DPP Nurul Ilyani Mohd Tamam asked that no bail be granted, to prevent the accused from disturbing the victim, adding that the case was of public interest.
Lam’s counsel Datin Raj Preet Kaur said her 31-year-old client was an only child to his single mother, who is a clerk.
Magistrate Mohd Azali Ibrahim did not grant bail and fixed April 26 for mention.
Koh was abducted from his car by a group of masked men along Jalan SS4B/10, Petaling Jaya on Feb 13. A CCTV video, which captured the abduction, showed three black SUVs stopping his car in the middle of the road.
