Gomez replaces Ong as national team coach

PETALING JAYA: National coaches Datuk Ong Kim Swee and Frank Bernhardt are the first casualties under new Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
Ong has been demoted to coach the national Under-22 team with former Johor Darul Ta'zim coach Mario Gomez (pic) appointed as new national team coach.
German coach Bernhardt, who was handling the Under-22 team for the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games from Aug 19-31, has been given the boot.
Tunku Ismail, who was officially announced as FAM president at the national body's 53rd Congress on Saturday, said he believes that his decision has the backing of his new executive committee.
"Kim Swee will be replaced by Mario Gomez and he can start work in FAM as early as this week," said Tunku Ismail at a press conference on Saturday.
"I want a different approach from what Bernhardt showed with the national Under-22 team."
Bernhardt is currently in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the Dubai Cup Under-23 tournament from March 20-28.
