Liow: MCA strongly opposes Hadi's Bill
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA will strongly oppose the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, or RUU 355, based on the version tabled by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic) reiterated that all laws and policies must not go against the spirit of the Federal Constitution.
Otherwise, MCA will oppose it whether the amendments are tabled by Umno, the Cabinet, or any party, he added.
Liow also said that MCA will convey the party's stand at the Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting on Wednesday night.
"Policy issues are always discussed at Barisan-level and consensus among its component parties is crucial," he said after chairing the MCA presidential council meeting at Wisma MCA here Tuesday.
In May last year, Abdul Hadi tabled a motion to amend the Act to allow syariah courts to impose stiffer penalties on all crimes except for those with the death sentence.
The Bill was read out a second time in November last year to include several tweaks that Hadi read out for the first time at the previous meeting.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced at the last Umno general assembly that the Government would eventually take over the Private Member's Bill.
