HONG KONG: A former school teacher accused of indecently assaulting three of his teenage students and having sex with two of them was jailed for five years at the High Court on Monday.
Justice Andrew Chan Hing-wai found that the defendant had exploited the girls and breached the trust placed in him.
“The defendant was going after his students to satisfy his sexual gratification,” Chan said. “One after the other, the defendant, instead of giving guidance to his students … decided to exploit them.”
Upon hearing the sentence, the 31-year-old man, whose name was concealed to protect the victims’ identities, remained expressionless in the dock. He had earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault and five counts of unlawful intercourse with girls under 16.
The offences took place from April 2014 to September last year when he taught science at a secondary school in the New Territories.
In mitigation, John Reading SC, for the defendant, said his client had been popular among colleagues and students. After leaving the teaching profession he had been working at a pharmacy.
The barrister pleaded with the judge for a lenient sentence that could facilitate his client’s rehabilitation.
The court earlier heard that the former chemistry teacher and one of the teenage girls, identified as “Z” in court, were lovers. Z was said to have told the man that she liked him and they became lovers in March 2014.
At that time they were in a relationship and would call each other “husband” and “wife”.
The man was said to have had sex with the girl, who was aged between 14 and 15 at that time, at her home and in guest houses. They used contraceptive measures, including condoms and pills.
In August last year the man took another student, identified as “Y”, to his home and molested her.
A month later he had sex with the girl, then 15, at his home.
“X”, another student, went to a film with the man in Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong, on July 18 last year. The man was said to have assaulted the 15-year-old girl on this occasion.
