KUALA LUMPUR: About 20 Opposition MPs marched from Parliament to the Bukit Aman police headquarters on Tuesday to demand the release of Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, who was detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

They also demanded that the rights of MPs be upheld, following the recent action against several MPs accused of breaching the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

The group, led by Datuk Johari Abdul (PKR-Sungai Petani), started their march at 9.45am, holding banners, placards and chanting slogans such as Bebas Maria (Free Maria) and Tolak Sosma (reject Sosma).

Other MPs who participated were Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Pribumi-Pagoh), Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Semporna), Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Gelang Patah) and Pakatan Harapan MPs.

At Bukit Aman, the group demanded to meet Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to hand over a memorandum.

Khalid, however, is currently overseas. Asst Supt Nor Azman Yusof of the corporate communications secretariat received the memorandum.

Maria is being held at an undisclosed location after her arrest last Friday, hours before the weekend's Bersih 5 rally.

Muhyiddin and Shafie were recently investigated under the OSA over speeches they made in the Dewan Rakyat.

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, meanwhile, was found guilty of breaching the OSA for his public disclosure of the Auditor-General's findings on 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
