KUALA LUMPUR: The residents from Taman Idaman, Serendah, Hulu Selangor said they are grateful to be alive and feel safe at the temporary shelter set up at Sekolah Rendah Agama Serendah.

Retiree Fuat Muhammad, 59, one of the homeowners, said the road caved in a split second.

“When the landslide happened, the ground shook,” Fuat said.

He said if the entire neighbourhood were to be relocated, he hopes all of his neighbours could be relocated to the same area.

“I have been living in this neighbourhood for 19 years. It was a peaceful residential area as all of us help out one another,” said Fuat, who is taking refuge at the shelter with his family of seven.

Another resident Mohd Kodus Mohd Rafi, 50, has been living in the neighbourhood for 15 years with his family of nine.

When the landslide happened, he had just returned from his hometown with his family. He added that the drainage system in the area was not effective. Each time it poured, the water in the drains will rise and overflow.

Serendah native Muhd Adam Anand Abdullah, 30, said he was on his way home from a shop nearby when he witnessed the landslide.

“The moment the landslide happened, it sounded like thousands of zinc sheets were falling,” said Adam who is living with his family of eight at the shelter.

“Shortly after the landslide, I brought my family to stay at my mother’s house nearby,” he said.

At the relief centre, each family is given a tent, sarongs, pillows and blankets.

Residents are uncertain as to the duration that they would have to stay at the relief centre.
