An air crash involving two small planes at an air show in Portugal on Sunday killed one pilot and injured another, Anadolu Agency reported citing Portuguese news agency Lusa.

Two small planes crashed at an air show in Portugal, killing one Spanish pilot and injuring another.

The crash happened at Air Base No 11 in Beja during the 72nd anniversary celebration of the Portuguese Air Force.

The Portuguese Air Force will investigate the crash; The aircraft involved is a Yakovlev Yak-52.

The accident happened at Air Base No 11 in Beja, southern Portugal which was hosting an air show to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the Portuguese Air Force (PAF).

The PAF later confirmed the report and said: "The Air Force informed at 4.05 pm local time (1505 GMT) at the Beja Air Show, two aircraft were involved in a crash while performing a flight demonstration."

He said the air force provided emergency services, under a contingency plan, which was implemented immediately.

The media cited a PAF source who identified the two aircraft as Soviet-era Yakovlev Yak-52 training aircraft and added that the pilot who died was a Spanish citizen.

Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo said the air force would investigate the crash.
