KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian-born singer Lyia Meta continues to strengthen her position on the international stage when her vocals in her singing album are listed as Grammy Award nominees.
Through the song "Delta Shine" with Latin-American musician Antonio Vergara, the singer received a nomination in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category.
For Meta, this nomination means more than a personal success, which highlights the potential of Malaysian artists to compete and excel on the world stage.
“For an independent artist, being part of a Grammy-nominated album means more than the honor itself.
"Without the support of a big label, it is a confirmation of one's dedication to create something meaningful, like spinning gold from straw in the midst of noise," said Meta memetic reported by the portal Free Malaysia Today, on Monday.
The nominations for the 2025 Grammy awards were announced last Friday and Meta is hoping to find support at music's biggest night in Los Angeles on February 2.
Although Meta is the first Malaysian singer to be involved in a Grammy nomination, Malaysian-born composer Zuraini Khalid Zonneveld has previously won a Grammy for a blues album.
US-based Zuraini co-wrote the song, “One Friend” with American blues musician, Keb' Mo, on the album “Keep It Simple” which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2005.
Another Malaysian-American who shines is Phil Tan, a three-time Grammy-winning and 14-time nominated audio engineer and mixer.
Meta's dream of getting his name on the Grammy Awards list began when he was approached by Vergara to collaborate on "The Fury."
Vergara, known for her emotional music, is looking for a new voice to give her album a new dimension.
Meta's unique vocal style makes him the perfect choice for this project.
Meta said, when he received the invitation from Antonio to participate in the blues album, he realized that it was an opportunity to explore another channel of expression.
“The Grammy nominations for Antonio's album and, as he generously says, 'our album', are proof that every late night, every self-confidence and every moment spent making authentic music really counts.
“I never imagined that I would be a part of something like this. It's an honor to work with such talented musicians and be appreciated by the industry in this way.
"It's a reminder that, as an independent artist, even without full industry support, the power of persistence, creativity, and connections can reverberate on the global stage, turning hard-earned dreams into reality," he said.
Meta also continues to be closely involved with his music project with his friend from America, Denise Dimin.
“Denise gave me the drive to keep going, encouraging me to pursue collaborations that expanded my artistic reach.
“This led to projects like Descendents (79 languages) in the Global Music Album category and my own album, Next, with Denise in the Traditional Pop Vocal Album category.
"Both of those albums are also on the latest Grammy nomination list," he said.
