HOUSTON: One person was killed and 16 people, including students, were injured in a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning on the campus of Tuskegee University, Alabama, United States, Xinhua reported.
An 18-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while 12 others were injured from gunshot wounds, according to the State Bureau of Investigation, Alabama's Law Enforcement Agency.
Tuskegee University in a statement informed that the victim who died was not a student of the university.
"The other victims, including Tuskegee University students, suffered injuries and are being treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and South Baptist Hospital in Montgomery," according to the statement.
The incident occurred as Tuskegee University was celebrating its 100th "Homecoming" on Saturday, during a football game between Tuskegee and Miles College from Alabama.
"We believe there are two shooters, maybe more," an official said in a radio call broadcast by Broadcastify.
However, no arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, according to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
"I ask all attendees to join me in meditating for a moment to remember the souls that have died and to remember the families and friends who are grieving," said Tuskegee University President and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Brown while expressing concern for the safety of students and university staff.
The tragic incident is the latest in a string of shootings on university campuses during homecoming events in the southern United States.
On Oct. 19, a shooting incident after the homecoming game at Albany State University, Georgia, claimed one life and injured several others.
In Lexington, Mississippi, the homecoming event also turned violent when three were killed and eight were wounded by gunfire.
Earlier, on Oct. 12, a shooting incident near Tennessee State University in Nashville killed one man and injured nine others.
