WASHINGTON: The President-elect of the United States (US), Donald Trump, is reportedly planning to fire the entire team of Special Counsel Jack Smith who is investigating his involvement in the 2011 riots at the Capitol as well as the classified documents case, Sputnik reported .
According to a report by The Washington Post on Saturday, which cited two people familiar with the plan, Trump also plans to fire experienced government lawyers who are usually shielded from political backlash.
Trump also reportedly intends to establish an investigative team within the Department of Justice to gather evidence regarding alleged fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election, particularly in swing states.
However, the introduction of rules that would allow Trump to fire government employees without hindrance is expected to take years, according to experts interviewed by the newspaper.
Earlier this month, US media reported that Jack Smith is expected to resign as Special Counsel before Trump returns to the White House.
Smith has held the position since November 2022.
Media reports also mention that the proceedings against Trump may be stopped before he officially assumes the office of President.
The US Presidential Election took place last November 5, with Trump, who served as President from 2017 to 2021, announced as the winner by all major statistical agencies and media.
The Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, conceded defeat in a speech to her supporters.
The Electoral College is expected to vote in accordance with the will of the voters on December 17, and the new Congress will approve the decision on January 6.
The President's swearing-in ceremony will take place on January 20.
