MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday denied claims that he deliberately used his black labrador, Koni, to scare German Chancellor Angela Merkel during their meeting in 2007.
When asked about the incident, Putin denied that he knew of Merkel's phobia of dogs.
He explained that his intention was only to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
In her new memoir 'Freedom', Merkel revealed that she once asked an aide to contact Putin's team in 2006 to ensure Koni was not present at their meeting in Moscow, because he was afraid of dogs.
Putin honored the request and gave Merkel a toy dog, joking that the toy wouldn't bite.
However, at the meeting in Sochi the following year, Koni was allowed to roam the meeting room.
The dog walked up to Merkel, who looked clearly uncomfortable sitting next to Putin in front of television cameras and photographers.
Putin stated that he had apologized to Merkel after the incident.
He also stated that if Merkel visits him again, he will not repeat the act.
