PETALING JAYA: Fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, who was severely injured during a fracas at a temple in Subang Jaya last month, has died.

He was 24.

Adib had been receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN). He died at 9.41pm.

Previously, IJN had said that Adib’s condition had worsened, showing “progressive deterioration of his lung function” due to his severe lung injury.

Doctors had decided to reinsert the Veno-Venous ECMO system again at 9pm last night to assist with his breathing.

Adib also required dialysis support as his renal function had not improved.

Last Sunday, it was reported that Adib was still relying on life support machines to allow his internal organs to heal. It was also reported that he remained in critical, but stable condition.

Doctors had also taken Adib off the life support machine for his heart after it was able to function on its own.

Adib was part of the team of firefighters who rushed to USJ25 following a protest over the relocation of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple which saw rioters setting vehicles on fire.

He was dragged out of the Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle and was assaulted.

Adib’s remains will be taken to the Hang Tuah fire station for prayers before burial in Kedah.

Condolence messages from Malaysians, including politicians and ministers, began to pour in immediately after news broke of Adib’s death.

Former prime minister Najib Razak, who had visited Adib at IJN, said he was very sad upon hearing about the fireman’s demise.

“My condolences to his family,” he said in a tweet.

Some social media users urged authorities to nab and charge those responsible for Adib’s death.

He was supposed to wed Nurul Najihah Mohd Radzi, 25, on Dec 21.

KUALA LUMPUR: The prime minister’s wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali visited Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, the fireman who was seriously injured in the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple fracas, at the National Heart Institute (IJN) here today.

According to sources, Siti Hasmah arrived at IJN at about 3pm and left 45 minutes later.
She was accompanied by officers from the Fire and Rescue Department and was briefed about Adib’s condition by medical officers from the IJN.
Yesterday, IJN in a statement said Adib was critically ill, following “progressive deterioration of his lung function” in the last 24 hours.

Adib was allegedly beaten up by several people on Nov 27 during the riots near the temple in Subang Jaya, sparked by a dispute over the proposed relocation of the temple.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Ramsay Sime Darby Medical Centre, Subang Jaya, before being transferred to the IJN the following night.
