KOTA KINABALU: An attempt to bring in syabu with a street value of RM1mil as Christmas gifts was intercepted by Sabah Customs officers.

A 38-year-old local man was detained as he turned up to pick up the 26kg of syabu at a courier company, said Sabah Customs deputy director Madrim Tasan at a press conference here on Wednesday (Dec 26).

He said the drugs were hidden in Da Guan Yin tea packets and placed inside several boxes of baby diapers.

“The suspect told us the boxes from Kuala Lumpur were gifts for the year-end holidays,” he said.
“We staked out and waited for him to come and pick it up,” he said, adding that the man was arrested at about 6.50pm on Friday (Dec 21).

The suspect has been remanded for further investigations until Jan 4, he said.

This is the second biggest seizure of drugs this year, Madrim said.

“The biggest involved 103kg of drugs seized in Sandakan last February," he added.

There were a total 13 drug cases handled by the Customs Department this year. In all, they involved drugs with a street value of RM9.2mil.
