Recount ordered for Tasek Gelugor seat won by 81 votes

GEORGE TOWN: The Election Court has allowed a petition by PPBM for a recount of votes in the Tasek Gelugor federal seat, which was narrowly won by Barisan Nasional in the May polls.
Judge Hashim Hamzah set Jan 2 for a recount of votes tabulated in the constituency, and Jan 14 for case management.
Lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, who represents PPBM’s Marzuki Yahya who lost to Umno’s Shabudin Yahaya by 81 votes, said all the 136 Form-14s would be brought to court for the recount session.
“The court has ordered the Election Commission to bring all the Form 14s for Tasek Gelugor, break the seal, and be scrutinised by lawyers of both parties before the Election Court on Jan 2,” he told FMT.
Shabudin has since quit Umno.
Form-14 is a document confirming the total number of votes candidates get at each polling station.
Marzuki’s petition went to a retrial after the Federal Court decided the case must be heard at the Election Court again, as it concerned the number of votes.
The deputy foreign minister who was made a senator, filed the petition to recount 689 spoilt votes and 297 unreturned postal votes.
On Sep 18, Marzuki’s petition was shot down by the Election Court due to technicalities. He then appealed against the decision at the Federal Court.
Rafique said the Form-14s from polling districts in Tasek Gelugor will be checked to determine the exact number of votes for each candidate.
He said each form would be checked against the Election Commission’s official records, copies of which are held by BN and PPBM.
Rafique said if the numbers differed in the Form-14 sealed in a box, compared to the copy given to BN, it would be “awkward
