A human trafficking syndicate is believed to have been crippled, after Police nabbed a 37-year-old man, who was with 15 ille¬gal immigrants on Monday night.
State Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commssioner Zainol Samah said the bust took place when Police halted a white coloured four-wheel drive.
This was after alert Policemen noticed the occupants of the vehicle behaving suspiciously.
They stopped the vehicle driven by the suspect near Kubang Semang, Bukit Mertajam at about 10.45pm to conduct a check.
“Inside the vehicle, there were five women and 10 men, aged between 16 and 30, all from Myanmar. They did not possess any travel documents,” he said today.
Zainol said initial investigations revealed that the suspect had picked up his ‘passengers’ from the Changlun Bus station in Perlis.
They were being transported, to be handed over to a syndicate member in Prai, he added.
He revealed that for each immigrant transported, the 37-year-old will receive RM120 from the syndicate member.
Zainaol said Police are in the midst of tracking down other members of the syndicate.
The case is being in¬vestigated under Sec¬tion 26A of Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of Immigration Act 1959/63.
