KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened an investigation paper over The Star’s front page on Saturday, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
He said the investigation was initiated following reports lodged by the public over the front page.
“We have opened an investigation paper under the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 298A of the Penal Code.
“So, we will call those who are responsible for publishing the photo on the front page to explain the reason the caption and the photo were (both) on the front page,” Khalid told reporters after an event at Bangunan Bakti here yesterday.
On Monday, the Home Ministry issued The Star a show cause letter over its front page report and layout.
The Star has been given seven days to respond to the letter.
The ministry later issued a statement, saying that it was disappointed with the heading on the front page and the accompanying photograph which was unrelated.
It said that having the heading and the photograph on the same page was confusing and could lead to misunderstanding and prejudice against Muslims which might be linked to terrorism.
The Star issued an apology via its online news portal and Twitter on Sunday.
Another apology was issued on the front page of the print version on Monday.
