IGP Khalid: Thai police also looking for missing activist Peter Chong

PUTRAJAYA: Thai police are looking for activist and former Petaling Jaya councillor Peter Chong, reportedly missing since last week, to make sure that he is safe and sound, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
"We are in contact with our counterparts in Thailand. We are told that they are helping to look for him as they also want to make sure he is safe in Thailand,” Khalid said.
On Wednesday, Khalid said police have evidence that Chong crossed the border at the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration checkpoint into Thailand at around 6.30am on April 7 and there is no record of his return to Malaysia.
"I hope he will contact his family to inform them of his well-being and the reason he went there,” Khalid said.
Chong disappeared not long after posting an update on his Facebook page on March 31 about a strange encounter with an unnamed man.
Chong, who served as a personal assistant to Subang MP R. Sivarasa for a few years until 2015, said he was warned by a young motorcyclist to be careful because many people were going missing.
On reports that Malaysians who have joined Islamic State in Syria want to return, Khalid said they could but they would be detained and questioned.
"They can come back to Malaysia. After all this is their country. But they will have to go through the process of deradicalisation before they can return to society,” said Khalid at a seminar "Evolving Threats of Money Laundering and Financial Crimes: The Malaysian Experience".
