KUALA LUMPUR: A video footage of a 'mat salleh' (Western) tourist singing to a local Malay rock hit posted on YouTube a week ago has caught the attention of many locals, Kosmo! reported today.
The YouTube video, titled ''Mat Salleh Hafal Lagu ROCK KAPAK AXL - Akulah Kekasihmu di Bukit Bintang'(Mat Salleh in Bukit Bintang memorise the lyrics to AXL's classic rock hit "Akulah Kekasihmu") was an instant hit, and garnered almost 236,000 viewers so far.
The 4-minute video showed a group of local street musicians performing 'Akulah Kekasihmu’ to a crowd at a popular tourist spot in Bukit Bintang when the camera suddenly zoomed in on a couple of foreign tourists who were seen enjoying and lip-syncing the lyrics to the song.
When caught doing so, an audience among the crowd pulled one of the tourist seen mimicking the lyrics and got him singing along on the microphone.
Among the lyrics sang by the tourist was: "Kernaku kekasihmu, hingga ke akhir hayat," (Because I am your love, 'till the end of time).
The tourist impressed the crowed and was given a standing ovation.
The spontaneity of the tourist to sing in the national language in public was praised in social media sites because many believe cityfolks nowadays are getting more relunctant to speak in the national language.
The song 'Akulah Kekasihmu' was made popular around the 1990s.
