SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested a man with an object believed to be a homemade pipe bomb ahead of tonight's planned New Year's Eve rally at Dataran Merdeka.
Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar said the 46-year-old shop attendant was arrested on Sunday at Taman Halaman in Ampang after during a high speed chase with police.
DCP Abdul Rahim said during questioning, the suspect said he planned to plant the bomb tonight at Dataran Merdeka.
"We believe that he was going to plant the bomb during New Years Eve as we do not see any other motive.
“It is also possible that he was hired to plant the bomb," he told a press conference at the state police headquarters on Tuesday.
"What is more worrying is the contents of the object.  Our bomb unit has revealed that the pvc pipe contains glass shards and nails," he said.
He added that checks on the suspect also revealed that he had nine previous criminal records and was wanted for a drug related case in Ampang.
DCP Abdul Rahim added that the case was being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 and has been remanded for three days until Jan 1.
