Malaysian police deny capturing escaped Indonesian convict
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian police have denied a foreign wire report that it recently arrested an Islamist militant who had broken out of jail during a prison riot in Tanjung Gusta prison in Medan, Indonesia in July.
Denying that Fadli Sadama was arrested, Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah told Bernama that it (the news) was untrue.
The Agence France Presse (AFP) quoted Indonesia's national police spokesman Agus Rianto that the militant was recaptured in Malaysia, and handed over to the Indonesian authorities.
He was among 200 inmates who fled the Tanjung Gusta prison after prisoners set the facility ablaze in a riot, which left five people dead.
It was reported that anti-terror officials also accused Fadli of having links with the Pattani United Liberation Organisation separatist group in southern Thailand.
Fadli was also believed to have been a courier for Noordin M. Top, the now-deceased Malaysian bomb-maker from the Jemaah Islamiyah group, who had masterminded several deadly bombings in Indonesia, according to AFP. - Bernama
