Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) is a national day of Malaysia commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malayafrom British colonial rule in 1957, celebrated on August 31 each year. At the same time The United States of America has extended its well wishes and congratulations to Malaysia on its 56th Independence Day celebration tomorrow.
US Secretary of State John Kerry in a statement sent through the US embassy here, today said: "On behalf of President (Barack) Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to congratulate all Malaysians as you celebrate your 56th Independence Day on Aug 31.
"I wish all Malaysians around the world a Happy Merdeka Day. Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan".
He said the United States was proud to call Malaysia a partner and a friend, adding that the longstanding ties between the people of the two countries were closer than ever, through initiatives like the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Programme, expanded university ties, and enhanced scientific collaboration.
"Malaysia's hosting the Global Entrepreneurship Summit on Oct 11 to 12 will bring together innovators, entrepreneurs, governments, private sectors, and academicians from around the globe, and will help our young people prosper," he said.
Kerry added that the robust trade and investment relationship has also long benefited both countries, and would continue to do so into the future
