Police Warn Triad Gang Members Against Provocation In Shooting Case

GEORGE TOWN, Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi today urged members of triad gangs to stop questioning police's action in fighting serious crimes in the country and to cease provocation in the shooting case involving five triad members last Monday.

He said police had also identified several triad gang members who displayed their logos on the banners they carried during the funeral of their dead members yesterday.

"We have received intelligence information, including a video of the funeral procession.

"Besides, we have also received several reports concerning the procession and further action will be taken according to Section 42 of the Societies Act 1966," he told reporters after participating in the crime prevention operation dubbed 'Ops Cantas Khas' at Lebuh Farquhar here today.

Yesterday, the bodies of three of the triad members killed in police shootout on Monday, were given an elaborate send-off with a funeral procession accompanied by drums and firecrackers along Jalan Yeap Chor Ee, Jalan Bukit Gambir and Jalan Tun Dr Awang before being cremated in separate incinerators here and in Butterworth.

Commenting further on Ops Cantas Khas today, Abdul Rahim said the operation involved officers and staff from the Penang Criminal Investigation Department who were stationed at 12 selected locations.

He said police would detain any individuals, including former Emergency Ordinance detainees, suspected to be involved in serious crimes.

During the operation, he said each police personnel was also equipped with special gear and equipment as a preparation to face untoward incidents.

Abdul Rahim also said that 16 men had been detained since the operation began last Saturday and they had been remanded to facilitate investigation under the Crime Prevention Act.
