POLICE SEIZE DRUGS WORTH 3.8 MILLION!

BIGGEST DRUG BUST IN KEDAH: Suspect about to board bus from Alor Star to KL with 20.5kg of drugs

ALOR STAR: THE Kedah Customs Department scored its biggest drug bust so far this year with the seizure of  20.5kg of syabu with an estimated street value of RM3.8 million on Tuesday.
Its director, Datuk Abd Aziz Abdul Latif, said the drugs, in 20 brown packages, were in a black bag belonging to a 43-year-old local man at Shahab Perdana bus terminal here about 10.30am.
"Acting on a tip-off, a narcotics team carried out a thorough inspection on the man, who was about to board an express bus to Kuala Lumpur.
"The team found 20 packages containing syabu underneath a canvas bag in his luggage," he said at the department's headquarters at Jalan Pegawai here yesterday
Checks on the suspect's passport showed that he had just arrived from Thailand on the day he was arrested.
Aziz believed that the suspect, who was unemployed since last year, had made frequent visits to that country. The man has been remanded for seven days until Aug 27 to facilitate investigations.
Meanwhile, Aziz said 30 additional Customs officers had been deployed at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Customs, Immigration and Quarantine checkpoint since June to assist in Op Cantas, the nationwide crackdown on crime.
The deployment of the additional officers, from Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang and Perlis, was to tighten security along Malaysia-Thailand border and combat the smuggling of firearms into the country.
