BUCHAREST: Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation on Monday, stating that he would step down on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.
"To save Romania and its people from this crisis ... I resign as President of Romania," Iohannis told a press conference at the Cotroceni Palace.
"I will relinquish this position the day after tomorrow, on Feb 12," he added. The decision comes as Romania's parliament is scheduled to convene on Tuesday at 10 a.m. local time to discuss a motion to suspend Iohannis from the presidency.
