IPOH, Feb 22 -- A total of 59 couples decided to exchange vows on today’s unique date, 22.02.2022, in a simple wedding ceremony at Wisma Chin Woo here.
The couples, aged 25 to 38, were married in a mass wedding organised by the Ipoh Chin Woo Association, which was witnessed by their happy parents.
One of the couples, Chan Kai Wei and his wife Chow Ji Khay, both 27, said they picked the date because it was very special and easy to remember, with the added bonus of being a lucky number worthy of celebration.
“We work in Singapore but still we are willing to return to our hometown here to pick today’s date for our marriage,” they said when met after their wedding.
Chan, a policeman and Chow, a fashion designer, also shared memorable moments of their relationship, which began since Standard Six till love blossomed as they grew up.
“We have known each other for 15 years and I started liking my wife since we were in Standard Six. Last year, I made the decision to propose at a famous vacation spot in Tambun,” he added.
Another couple, Tong Kok Leong, 29, said he and his wife, Hah Siaw Jun, 35, opted out of a private wedding involving only their families but decided to join the mass wedding as it would be a very memorable moment.
“Today’s date is unique and special for my wife and I because we don’t know when we will be able to get such a date in future. Also, the cost of the entire affair is only RM260 for each couple, including the ceremony and the marriage certificate,” the couple said with delight.
Meanwhile, association president Datuk Ooi Foh said the event was among the biggest organised after the almost two years of Movement Control Order (MCO) that badly affected their plans.
Some brides were seen dressed in their white wedding gowns adorned with beads while the grooms were smartly dressed in their tuxedoes.
Every 12 couples were wedded at a go on the stage followed by another 12 couples to maintain physical distancing throughout the event.
