Zabariah appointed to join Judicial Appointments Commission

PUTRAJAYA: Federal Court judge, Datuk Zabariah Mohd Yusof, has been appointed as a member of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) for a period of six months.
Zabariah's appointment is to replace Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan whose term of office ended two months ago.
Based on a search on the JAC website, Zabariah's name is listed on the latest list of commission members along with nine other individuals.
Zabariah's appointment was made by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in accordance with Section 5(1)(e) of the JAC Act.
Zabariah, who turned 66 on April 10, received a six-month extension of service from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Age 66 is the mandatory retirement age for judges.
Chief Justice, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat; President of the Court of Appeal, Tan Sri Amar Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim; Chief Justice of Malaya, Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim; and Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli also sit on the JAC as holders of the four highest positions in the judiciary.
Last year, four prominent figures were also appointed to the JAC for a two-year term starting November 1: former Attorney-General, Tan Sri Idrus Harun; former Federal Court Judge, Datuk Seri Zainun Ali; former Sarawak Attorney-General, Datuk Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid; and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) law lecturer, Associate Professor Dr Hartini Saripan.
The JAC's role is to nominate individuals for promotion and appointment to the Prime Minister as provided for under the JAC Act which has been in force since 2009.
The appointment of judges is then made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the advice of the Prime Minister after consulting the Conference of Rulers as stipulated under Article 122B(1) of the Federal Constitution.
